Queen’s unbeaten in tourney

- Ross Roche

CLASSIC schoolboy rugby action was on show at the weekend as the annual Cape Schools Rugby competition was battled out at Cape Town’s Rondebosch Boys’ High.

The Western Cape schools just edged out their Eastern Cape counterparts in the end, with most matches decided by close margins.

Border’s Queen’s, Dale and Selborne colleges were all in action, along with Eastern Province’s Grey High and Muir College, with each team playing two games against Western Cape opposition.

Queen’s finished as the only unbeaten Eastern Cape side, while Grey ended with one win and one loss. Dale drew a match and lost one, while Selborne and Muir lost both their encounters.

Queen’s put in a brilliant performance to upset hosts Rondebosch in the final game yesterday, claiming a tight 22-19 win.

It was the perfect end for Queen’s after claiming an impressive 26-22 victory over Wynberg on Saturday.

Dale seemed to underestimate their opponents yesterday as they lost 22-7 to Stellenberg.

Dale trailed 22-0 at half time and, despite an improved second half, crossed the line just once.

Dale should also have beaten hosts Rondebosch on the first day.

Grey High had two extremely close games.

On the first day they just pipped a strong Boland Landbou team 18-17. But yesterday, a last-gasp try saw SACS snatch a 20-18 win.

Muir were soundly beaten 40-10 by Stellenberg on Saturday and 47-0 by Boland Landbou yesterday.

Western Cape schools managed to win six fixtures, while Eastern Cape sides won three and drew one.
