Igazi Foundation pays tribute to crash victim

ONE of the teenagers who died in an accident when a taxi ploughed into a group of youngsters during a street party in Zwide on Sunday successfully fought leukemia a few months before he was killed.

Igazi Foundation spokesman Cole Cameron said yesterday they were devastated by the death of Siyasanga Adoons. The foundation promotes the rights of patients with blood diseases.

Cameron said Adoons, 19, resumed school this year after he won a battle against leukemia and was declared to be in remission.

Paying tribute to their patient, Cameron said nurses would remember Adoons as an exceptionally bright young man.

“He was a sharp dresser and even during his treatment he always looked great, saying that he never wanted to look untidy,” Cameron said.

On behalf of the foundation, he said he wanted to condemn the senseless death of Adoons.

Adoons was completing his matric after having to stay out of school for a year while receiving treatment.

“We find it so heartbreaking. He was forging ahead with his life only to be mowed down in this manner,” Cameron said.

The teen’s mother, Zola Adoons, said she had to phone the hospital this week to cancel his check-up appointment.

Adoons survived for a short while on the scene of the accident but died in the ambulance on the way to Dora Nginza Hospital.

Yonela Matyu and Mngomezulu Nokulunga, both 14, were also killed in the accident.

Another seriously injured teenager, Sinomta Mlatebe, 13, was dragged 50m down the road by the minibus in the hit-and-run.

The same taxi also hit Asanda Skweyiya, 19. Both are still at Livingstone Hospital recovering.

The suspected driver, Brighton Tsvipa, 30, who was allegedly speeding, is still on the run.

Police have appealed for assistance from the public and anyone with information can contact Captain Schalk van Wyk on 082527-7495.
