AMID the violence, abductions and gruesome killings of young women and children in South Africa in recent months, up-and-coming filmmakers from Central and Uitenhage have launched a short film called Miser y Loves Company .

Mpumelelo Peyi, 32, Thembela Landu, 31, and Siyabulela Mboya, 29, came together in the hope of creating a short but well-thought-out portrayal of how such events unfolded in households and communities.

“We’ve done various documentaries which tell stories and thought, considering what has been happening throughout South Africa lately, let us take a stand the best way we know how – by using our talents and the little resources we have,” Peyi said.

“We’ve always had a passion for filmmaking and so we have done what we can to turn it into a profession.”

Misery Loves Company was launched at the Seda Nelson Mandela Bay ICT Incubator in Newton Park recently.

“Our biggest aim is to take all we know and have learnt and teach it to the many who have very little or no access to television, DVDs and the internet,” Landu said.

“For instance, we would like to take this film and show it to rural communities.

“The film tells the story of a woman who has been a victim of abuse since childhood; it tells of what happens when women and children are mistreated.

“Hopefully through watching it, lives will be saved.”

Writer of the short film Siyabulela Mboya said: “I met these two gentlemen through my sister and I told them about my idea. I’ve always had a passion for writing and I am glad that my story is finally being told.”

Enterprise development officer at the Seda Nelson Mandela Bay ICT Incubator Kudakwashe Nyamutsambira said: “We’re always excited when we have up-and-coming creatives from different spheres of the Bay on board; it is our mandate to assist small companies, specifically in the IT spectrum.”
