Golden Heroes lose shine in woeful weekend

THE weekend was a nightmare for log-leaders Golden Heroes in the Wafa Premier League.

They went into the weekend tied with Peace United, but were ahead on a vastly superior goal difference.

In a top-of-the-table clash on Saturday, Heroes lost 1-0 to Peace, losing their place.

Worse was to follow on Sunday when they were easily beaten 3-1 by Walmer Stars, who are just outside the relegation zone.

Peace set a record on Sunday when they thrashed tailenders African Aces 23-0 to extend their lead to six points.

The win over Heroes capped a good weekend for Stars, who had a walkover against Airport Valley United the previous day.

In another top-of-the-table clash, African Aces, who are third, lost 3-2 to Real Madrid, who are one place below them.

The victory saw Madrid draw level with Aces on points, but they still trail on goal difference.

Madrid failed to repeat their performanc­e on Sunday, losing 2-0 to Morning Stars.

Ghetto Stars bagged maximum points from their doublehead­er to move to joint fourth with Morning.

They had a walkover against Manchester United on Saturday and thrashed Walmer Hotspurs 5-1 on Sunday.

The champions-elect, who clinched the title with three matches to spare, were hammered 4-0 by Volkswagen, who move up two places to third.

Nkosinathi Tiya led the onslaught with a hat-trick. Thozamile Ngesi added the fourth.

PE All Stars, one of five teams challengin­g for the runners-up spot, remain second with a close 3-2 win over Zwide Masters.

Luzuko Hambaze, Mfundo Gqirana and Thembekile Dlotho scored a goal each for Stars.

Lungile Davashe and Makwedinan­a Enose scored on either side of the break for Zwide.

Eleven Attackers remain in the race for second pace despite being held to a surprise 2-2 draw with PE Eleven, who are way down the log.

Young Pirates, who have an outside chance of finishing second, beat Soweto 1-0 courtesy of a first-half strike by Ntsikelelo Mdepha.

Joe Slovo, who are just one place away from the bottom of the log, held top eight outfit Winners to a 2-2 draw.

Mnikelo Ntanjana scored a brace for Slovo, with Nkosana Ndondo matching him for Winners.

Sparks kept their slim hopes of a second-place finish with a 2-1 win over Eberspache­r.

Mlungisi Bonga and Kaizer Qunta scored for Sparks, with Lungile Zenani pulling one back for Eberspache­r.
