Fogarty’s book drive runs over

Store’s new appeal for needy institutions

-

AN ICONIC Port Elizabeth bookshop rallied publishers to come to the aid of Woodridge College whose once-impressively stocked library was one of several buildings destroyed during the recent runaway veld fires.

The response was so overwhelming that there are now books to spare, specifically ones that are not suitable for high school readers.

Having done Woodridge a good turn, Fogarty’s Bookshop in Walmer Park is keen to pay it forward even more – and also see these titles going to deserving local recipients.

“We have been collecting donations of books for the Woodridge College library that was burnt to cinders,” owner Teresa Fogarty said.

“We appealed to our local publishers who have been really amazing and have donated many thousands of rands worth of books.

“We have had a huge amount of books donated from the publishers which are not suitable for the high school and we need to find homes for them.

“We would like to organise a donation party or occasion, or whatever, so that we can give some of the books and posters to poorer schools, perhaps farm or township schools.”

With this in mind, Fogarty’s is appealing for librarians and teachers to get in touch with them in order to collect books on behalf of their schools.

“School holidays [are under way] so the teachers should have the time,” Fogarty said.

“We are also appealing to the public to either buy a new book or books or a voucher – or to donate relevant books – for Woodridge College.

“We would like to ask all and sundry to help as I am sure that there are lots of books waiting for a new home.”

Woodridge librarian Roslyn Pienaar had left a list of requests and Fogarty’s has already donated books.
