St Andrew’s cricketers excel in UK

-

BLESSED with good weather, the St Andrew’s College cricket team enjoyed a successful tour of the United Kingdom, winning eight of their 10 matches.

In the loss to Whitgift, it was a case of never getting going with the bat, despite a brave effort with the ball to defend a small total.

The match against Wellington proved to be a humdinger and St Andrew’s fell just three runs short in a big run chase.

ý St Andrew’s hockey players Luke Hobson and Peter Jarvis were selected for the South African U18A side following the interprovincial in Durban.

Goalkeeper Thabo Sifumba was chosen for the SA U18B side.

Ross Vides, who played in the U18A side last year, missed the contest due to injury.

ý The St Andrew’s U16 team finished fourth in the East London Soccer Tournament hosted by Hamiltons Club this month.

After a good 3-1 win against Delta Park, the team lost 2-1to Bushbucks.

Needing at least a draw to make the semifinals, St Andrew’s faced a 2-0 deficit at half time against a well-drilled St Stithians side.

Throwing everything into the attack after the break, they levelled the scores at 2-2 with 15 minutes to go, but despite good pressure, were unable to get the winner.

However, they still qualified for the semis, where they again faced Bushbucks.

A disappointing 2-0 loss saw them play off for third position with Park United, losing a tight affair 2-1.

St Andrew’s player Tom More was recognised for his outstanding play during the tournament by being named in the tournament All Star Team.

ý Cameron Rafferty finished in a creditable fourth position in the national biathle championships.

He has been included in the national team for the world championships in Spain in September.
