MIDFIELD general Mark Mayambela will return to Port Elizabeth PSL side Chippa United on a three-year deal, the club confirmed yesterday.

Mayambela’s contract with Ajax Cape Town was due to expire in June next year.

Speaking to The Herald’s sister publication Sowetan, Mayambela, 29, said there had been bad blood between him and Chippa United boss Siviwe Mpengesi after his move to the Urban Warriors, but that was water under the bridge now.

“We have a special bond. Going back to them was never a hard decision. It’s like going back home.

“When I left, there was some tension but we talked it out and [club chairman Mpengesi] understood the decision I made.

“I hope this is my last home. I hope I will play the next three years for Chippa and beyond. We will see how it goes.”

Mayambela made a comeback to the big league during the 2015-16 campaign when he signed with the Chilli Boys after his stint at National First Division side Royal Eagles.

His move to Chippa was seen by many as a chance to revive his football career.

After spending only six months in Port Elizabeth, the Khayelitsha-born player, known as Professor in soccer circles, was snatched by Ajax.

Mpengesi welcomed the player back to the team.

“Chippa United is a home to Mark Mayambela and when there was an opportunity to bring him back to the club we did not hesitate,” he said.

“We are delighted to have him back in Port Elizabeth to finish what he started.

“Chippa United will give him a platform to fulfil the potential he showed in his early years in the PSL.

“The club has grown since Mark left and we have different objectives now.

“We have no doubt that he will add value to the growth of the brand, on and off the field.”

Meanwhile, Chippa also confirmed the signing of Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo on a three-year deal.

Mayambela and Mhlongo will join their teammates in Durban for their preseason camp.

The team is due to return at the end of the month.
