Grey sweat at Framesby, Brandwag thump Despatch in sloppy game

GREY High had to work hard for a 13-9 victory over Port Elizabeth rivals and hosts Framesby at the weekend.

The teams were locked at 6-6 at half-time and it was anybody’s match right up until the final whistle on Saturday, although Grey always looked the likely winners.

Grey never reached the top gear and struggled to put away Framesby, who played with great guts and determination in front of their home crowd.

The game produced only one try and, as a spectacle, failed miserably.

Both teams made a lot of handling errors and there were some poor decision making.

The lineouts were an absolute mess, with bad throwing by both sides.

When Grey got it right in this department, Phillip Weyer-Henderson and Travis de Bruin did some good work.

No 8 Bevan Prinsloo and lock Laken Grey had a few strong runs for Grey, but struggled to round off some promising play against strong tackling from Framesby.

The home team pack might have been on the back foot in the scrums, but they kept on working tirelessly to keep Grey at bay.

Props William Moffat and Roelof Meyer worked hard very for Framesby.

Flyhalf Grassie van Rensburg relieved the pressure for Framesby on many occasions with long touch finders, but on attack the home side had very little to offer.

For Grey, fullback Sihle Njezula and centres Aya Matroos and Waqar Solaan had promising runs but failed to round them off.

The only try came from right wing Kholiwe Konza shortly after the break. Flyhalf LJ du Preez added the conversion and also two penalties.

Van Rensburg kicked two penalties for Framesby in each half. BRANDWAG v DESPATCH

BRANDWAG had to fight hard for their 41-13 victory over neighbouring hosts Despatch.

The visitors fielded a strong side, with seven of Brandwag’s eight Craven Week players in the starting line-up.

Brandwag scored seven tries – four by Craven Week stars – to one by Despatch.

Unfortunately, the match was marred by a plethora of penalties.

Brandwag’s attacking streaks were stuck in second gear, as referee Christie du Preez lifted his arm for penalty after penalty.

Du Preez first reached for his card pocket late in the first half, but it did not save the game from the disregard which players on both sides, at times, showed for the rules.

For the home side, captain and lock Gary Kleyn had a fine encounter and made many meters for his side.

The half-time score was 17-6 to the school from Uitenhage.

Despatch’s only try came from a cleverly placed kick by flyhalf De Wet van Huysteen. With his team only metres away from the opposition tryline, Van Huysteen’s kick sent players from both teams flying through the air behind the tryline, but it was flank Theo Smit who managed to dot down the ball.

For Brandwag, scrumhalf Chadd Adams was outstanding and well supported by centre Juandre Sabbat. Both scored tries.

Brandwag’s other tries were scored by prop Le Klue Stokes, hooker Waldo van Greunen, flyhalf Bevan O’Neill, wing Dean Jordan and Chadwyn November, who had replaced O’Neill at flyhalf. Wing Gavin Kriel converted three tries. For Despatch, Van Huysteen kicked two penalties and a conversion. Other available results: Marlow 29 St Andrew’s 37; Selborne 27 Hudson Park 28; Queen’s 32 Kingswood 23; Graeme 24 Pearson 15; Muir 10 Woodridge 17; and Cambridge 31 Westering 17.
