Embark on journey of self-discovery

KWAMAGXAKI dancer Wezile Mgibe is presenting his show In These Streets with the Amandla Dance Company next week at the PE Opera House.

Amandla dancers Lepere and Mgibe will perform as a duo in the production on August 22 and 23, following up on a preview at the Tramways Building earlier this year.

“In These Streets is an experimental exploration of live art and dance,” said Mgibe, who researched the work in the Northern Cape last year during an OPENLab residency as part of the Modern Art Project.

“The work simply talks about being yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you someone else, it is an invitation to be part of the journey of self-discovery.”

He said the show was a combination of contemporary dance and improvisation.

“It is about different life events of ordinary human beings that we interviewed during the research residence, and the aim was to promote self-love and self-discovery from each and every individual,” Mgibe said.

“We discovered that we all wear this kind of mask when we leave our households to be accepted by society, by our parents and friends. They never know who we are and what we are going through till we bury the mask or the mask buries us.”

In These Streets is at 4.30pm on August 22 and 6pm on August 23. Tickets are R20. Inquiries: Gcobisa Mkize, (041) 585-1300 or 073-190-6769.
