NMU B and Lakeside enjoy goal-fest

Fast-paced men’s premier league hockey fixture ends in 5-5 draw

-

LAKESIDE Cavaliers and Mecer NMU B produced a goal-fest in their men’s premier league hockey fixture at the KC March Astro last weekend, ending in a 5-5 draw.

From the start both teams played at a high tempo, but Lakeside drew first blood with a goal by Darren Kimfley.

The sides shared equal possession and territory and NMU’s Andre Potgieter scored the equaliser after 10 minutes.

Early pressure by NMU B in the second quarter was rewarded with a goal by Jacques Potgieter, who deflected in a cross at the far post.

Spurred on, the Lakeside team made several entries into the NMU B circle, each time earning a penalty corner.

The first two were saved, the first being an excellent effort by NMU B goalkeeper Nathan Waters, but the third was slotted home by Lyall Meyer.

Lakeside continued to press high into NMU B territory and only another good save by Waters kept them at bay.

NMU B executed a quick counter-attack from deep in their own half, which was finished off at the other end with a goal by Cal Paulsen.

This was not the final action of the half, however, as Kimfley completed his brace for Lakeside almost immediately to restore parity at 3-3.

Lakeside regained the lead two minutes into the third quarter when Michael Abrahams scored from a penalty corner rebound.

They then applied a high press to keep NMU B on the defensive. As the quarter was drawing to a close, however, NMU B created a turnover and secure passing resulted in a goal by Jason McGillivray somewhat against the run of play.

NMU B threw everything they had into the final quarter and were rewarded when Potgieter scored his second of the night to make it 5-4.

The rest of the match was played at a great tempo and just when NMU B looked set to create the upset of the weekend, Kimfley produced his hat-trick goal for Lakeside with minutes to spare.
