- Neale Emslie

PROMISING Port Elizabeth golfer Kyle de Beer will be looking to further his development as a player to watch when he competes in the World Student Games in Chinese Taipei next week.

The 19-year-old Nelson Mandela University student, who won the Humewood club championship recently, is part of a three-man University Sport South Africa (USSA) team including Clayton Mansfield, from Durban, and Dylan Naidoo, of Johannesburg.

Starting on Wednesday, they will compete in a 72-hole strokeplay competition. This will be De Beer’s first competitive experience of golf overseas and he said he was excited about the opportunity.

“I don’t know much about Chinese Taipei, except that it will be hot and humid like many of the Asian countries,” he said.

Having flown out with the Ussa delegation on Wednesday, De Beer said they would be able to get in a few rounds before the tournament got under way.

He said he was happy with his form at this stage after clinching the Humewood title for the first time.

“My play was pretty average in the strokeplay section of the champs, but I played much better in the matchplay rounds,” he said after defeating Nelson Mandela University teammate Hando Brophy in the final.

“That was a very nice win for me and I am looking forward to building on that in the World Student Games.

“I have no idea of who will be attending the games, but I know the golf will be of a high standard.”
