Wembley B out to remain unbeaten in title chase

- Neale Emslie

LOG-LEADERS Wembley B will be looking to put the finishing touches to a winning season when they clash with NMU in the final round of the Nelson Mandela Bay tennis league fixtures at the campus tomorrow.

Unbeaten in their four matches so far, the Wembley team, largely comprising Grey High players, have the inside track to the title with a total of 40 points.

The varsity team are not out of the running, but they trail the leaders by five points and the 10-6 loss they suffered to Wembley A earlier in the season could make the difference in the final standings.

Wembley A, themselves, may feel they have a chance as they have 29 points from three matches and a big haul from their final fixture against Victoria Park could prove significant.

In a match both sides will be eager to win to avoid the wooden spoon, Gelvan Eagles (19 points) are at home to Bluewater Bay (22 points).

In the women’s first league, VP are well positioned to take the title when they host Wembley tomorrow.

Although there are some results outstanding, another win for VP, who are on 28 points, will secure them the top spot on the standings.

The men’s first A league is set for a fascinating climax after Wembley and VP registered narrow wins in last week’s semifinals.

Wembley defeated Addo 9-6 and VP shaded Westview 8-6 to set up what should be a well-contested final tomorrow.

The fixtures are (home teams first): Women first league: Westview v Despatch, Victoria Park v Wembley Latest log: VP 28 (3), Despatch 20 (3), NMU 16 (4), Westview and Wembley 14 (2) Men premier league: Gelvan Eagles v Bluewater Bay, Wembley A v Victoria Park, MMU v Wembley B Latest log: Wembley B 40 (4), NMU 35 (4), Wembley A 29 (3), VP 25 (4), Bluewater Bay 22 (4), Gelvan Eagles 19 (3) at Wembley
