Despatch race’s new ‘medal’

- Mogan Segadavan

PARTICIPANTS in Saturday’s Despatch SUPERSPAR 10km race will receive a unique medal in the form of a mini brick with the town’s historic chimney imprinted on it.

The small brick is made from genuine clay and baked exactly like a normal brick.

It will be the first in a series that the organisers will use over the next couple of years.

In its sixth year, the race organised by the Despatch Athletic Club is a participation and prestige league event, and will double as the EP Athletics championship race.

Champion Amos Nyongo (Ikhamva), who finished in 29:45, will face stiff competition from Melikhaya Frans.

Frans is in top form as he prepares for the Cape Town City Marathon, which has prize-money of R250 000.

Asanda Solani (Achilles), who won the women’s category in 39:13, will have her work cut out when she lines up against Ntombisintu Mfunzi, who is also targeting the Cape Town City Marathon.

Entry fee for the 10km race is R50. The 5km Klinicare fun run has an entry fee of R20.

There is a temporary licence fee of R30 for the longer race.

EPA registered athletes older than 65 can enter the 10km race free.

Entries at sports shops and Despatch Klinicare close at 5pm today.

Late entries will be accepted at the Despatch SUPERSPAR in Dr Rabie Street from 5pm to 7pm on Friday and on the morning of the race.

There will be a lucky draw, with the main prize of a R2 500 SUPERSPAR voucher up for grabs for a 10km entrant.

Participants in the fun run stand in line to win a mountain bike.
