Book Lovers lunch for a cause

- Gillian McAinsh

A TRIO of authors will be meeting book lovers this week over lunch at St Francis Links.

The Book Lovers Lunch at the Links Club House on Thursday in St Francis Bay, will feature Fiona Snykers, Mia Henry and Lesley Smailes.

Snyckers will be discussing her fifth novel Spire, published by Clockwork Books in June, and is joined by two new Port Elizabeth authors Smailes and Henry, who have had books published this year.

As well as the Trinity series of novels, and the Sisterz series of mobile phone novels commissioned by the Shuttleworth Foundation, Snyckers has had many short stories published in magazines and collections.

Spire is the second instalment of her Burchell Sisters Trilogy. The first, the thriller Now Following You, was published by Modjaji Books in 2015 and was the third Snyckers novel to be nominated for the Sunday Times Fiction Prize.

Reflexologist and meridian therapist Smailes spent 10 years in a sect in the US not long after leaving school and tells the tale of her time in the sect in Cult Sister.

She recounts how her lifestyle in a controversial religious group led to her living out of a backpack, having home births, living the “freeman” lifestyle, entering into an arranged marriage with a “Brother”, receiving harsh threats of losing her children and surviving in strange and glorious ways.

Cult Sister is told largely through a series of letters between Smailes and her mother, and is published by Tafelberg.

Henry drew on her own tragic experiences to write A Mother’s Sin, which she self-published under AuthorHouse.

Henry ’s novel is based not only on the death of a child but also on her own mother’s “sin” and asks the question: Do a mother’s actions affect a family, and lead to tragedy?

The Book Lovers Lunch is a three-course meal with wine, starting at noon on Thursday, and tickets are R250 per person. Books will be auctioned and sold, and there will be prizes. All proceeds will go towards sterilising cats and dogs through St Francis Animal Rescue.
