Turner and Gascoyne win hat-trick of titles

- Neale Emslie

JAYNE Turner and Di Gascoyne made it a hat-trick of titles when the third Wembley Ladies Doubles tennis tournament came to a successful conclusion at the Mill Park club on Saturday.

A capacity total of 48 players entered the tournament.

Club chairman Gavin Cullen said it had been another tremendous day of tennis, enjoyed by the players and spectators.

The women’s top section was divided into two groups, with Turner and Gascoyne winning their division fairly comfortably.

The other group was closely contested before Lynne Neubert and Sharon Dawson edged Pri Bladen and Lynette Vermaak for the right to play in the final.

Turner and Gascoyne made a flying start in the final, getting out to a 5-1 lead before Neubert and Dawson dug in to win the next two games.

However, the gap was too big and the defending champions got home 6-3 to claim the honours once again.

In section two, the honours went to Liza van Zyl and Kayleigh van Huyssteen, while section three was won by Erin Slater and Leane Engelbrecht.

Cullen said they were delighted with the way the tournament went, indicating that it was now a permanent date on the calendar.

“The weather was great, the ladies enjoyed it and we had great prizes, with everyone taking something home in the end,” he said.

“We changed the format this year and it proved to be a winner.

“Last year we had too many players sitting out for too long, but it was much better this year.”
