Tips on caring for your eyesight

-

MANY people often take for granted how fortunate they are to enjoy the magnificent gift of sight.

It’s Eye Care Awareness Month and Spec-Savers would like to remind people of the following tips on how to take care of their eyes and health:

Visit an optometrist or doctor regularly and don’t ignore problems with your eyes.

Protect your eyes from damage or scratches that can lead to infections by wearing proper eyewear when working with dangerous equipment.

Wear a hat with a brim and sunglasses to block out harsh ultraviolet sunlight.

Take regular breaks from computer screens to help minimise eyestrain and prevent the development of eye-focusing problems.

Strengthen your eyes by eating green leafy vegetables, fruit and other foods with antioxidants.

Vitamins and minerals that promote eye health, such as vitamin A,C, E and zinc, can also be taken.

At 60 years of age, start going for a comprehensive dilated eye exam every two years to check for signs of age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma or other vision disorders.

Quit smoking: Smoking often promotes eye diseases because it reduces the blood flow to the eyes and can increase the amount of toxic substances that the eyes absorb.

Spec-Savers offers a variety of deals tailored to everyone’s individual needs.

Through its social responsibility initiatives such as Kids Right to Good Sight, Spec-Savers has given free eye tests and spectacles to more than 270 000 children.

For those who are short on cash or have limited medical aid benefits to cover their optometric needs, there is also the option of purchasing on a Spec-Savers account, which offers the first six months interest free.

Make sure to book your next eye examination with Spec-Savers for affordable eye care and a whole lot more.
