Grey off to good start at Cricket Week

-

HOSTS Grey High made a good start to the Cape Schools Cricket Week with wins over St Andrew’s (Bloemfontein) and SACS from Cape Town at the weekend.

Sent in to bat by St Andrew’s in the opening match, Grey lost two early wickets before Luke Beaufort (61) and Tristan Stubbs (49) put on a century stand for the third wicket.

Tiaan van Vuuren was unlucky to run out of partners six runs short of his century.

The Grey bowlers were always in command, with legspinner Connor de Lange taking five wickets as they dismissed St Andrew’s for 130 with three overs to spare to win by 138 runs.

Grey had another good win on the second day against SACS, who had just come off a five-wicket victory in their opening game against St Andrew’s College in Grahamstown.

The Grey seamers did the damage early on and SACS never really recovered to be bowled out for 181. The last pair added a useful 30 runs.

Sean Callaghan (35no) held the Grey innings together to register a three-wicket win.

There were two centuries recorded on the opening two days.

Matt Dewar scored 181 for Selborne as they played out a high-scoring draw against Rondebosch, while Ruan Terblanche made 111 for Paul Roos in their win against Union High.

St Andrew’s School offspinner Ruan Cronje returned the incredible figures of 9/85 in a losing cause against Paarl Boys’

The upset of the weekend was Dale’s 31-run win over the fancied Wynberg team.

However, they collapsed on day two to lose to Union High.

Paarl Boys’ and Grey were the only teams to win both their games on the first two days.
