THIRD-year students from the Stageworld Theatre College are to showcase their creativity at the Port Elizabeth Opera House Barn Theatre from tonight until Friday.

As a project for their acting module, three students from the college will showcase their own theatre productions at the theatre, forming the three-day Stageworld Theatre College 2017 Third Year Festival.

The festival is hosted annually giving students the opportunity to share their theatrical skills with the public

The three students – Logan Andrews, Yamkela Deleki and Shafiq Kalumo – have each produced theatrical pieces of between 45 minutes and an hour in which they tackle various social challenges.

Kalumo’s Nzika (The Citizen) tackles social challenges faced by migrants in South Africa.

“It’s basically the story of a young man who comes to South Africa [in search of] greener pastures but his wife and child get killed in a house fire,” Kalumo said.

Andrews’s I Retaliate tells the story of a woman who seeks revenge on her former medical school professor who had kidnapped and molested her.

“It’s about a married couple where the husband meets a friend who turns out to be his wife’s former professor who tortured her in university.”

In her one-woman comedy production, BOB: Bring Your Own Booze, Deleki uses humour to encourage communication between parents and children to curb alcohol abuse.

The play tells the story of a rural teenage girl who relocates to urban areas with her parents and struggles to adjust to the new life.

BOB: Bring Your Own Booze will be staged tonight, I Retaliate tomorrow night and Nzika (The Citizen) on Friday. All shows start at 7pm and tickets cost R30 with students paying R20.
