Rhodes gets new registrar
RHODES University has appointed a new registrar, who took up the position earlier this month.
Dr Adele Moodly took over from longstanding registrar Dr Stephen Fourie, who retired after more than 20 years in the position.
Moodly, who was born and raised in Port Elizabeth, said she would use her new position to promote the inclusion of women in senior positions in the workplace, especially in higher education.
“South African institutions, particularly higher education, need to recognise and affirm all women, especially black women, who are competent, qualified, experienced and offer a different style of leadership to the predominantly masculine character [and] forms of leadership we find in the gendered cultures of our institutions,” she said.
She is a former Rhodes student herself with qualifications including a BA in English and psychology, a higher diploma and master’s degree in education, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Netherlands Business School.
Moodly was previously a deputy dean and dean of schools at the University of Fort Hare and was a council member of Walter Sisulu University.
“I still do supervision, I am co-authoring a book, and I am still doing research in my passion, women in leadership positions in higher education.”
Rhodes vice-chancellor Dr Sizwe Mabizela said Moodly’s appointment came at a time when the 113-year-old institution was aggressively pursuing transformation while reviewing progress made.
