News we don’t want to hear

-

FAKE news is old news, but what to make of the recent emergence of “dumb news”?

When SA Rugby celebrates “25 years of rugby unity” while simultaneously attempting to shut down East Cape and Free State rugby – that’s dumb news!

When a World Cup-winning ex-Bok captain, who played in 111 tests, discussing PRO14, goes around saying, “The problem we have is that we’ve got six teams, and we can’t afford six teams.

“The Kings and the Cheetahs are going to struggle for year one and year two.

“Let’s give them two seasons and in year two give them a few more players and then we start rotating.

“One year we have the Kings and Cheetahs and the next the Sharks and Bulls” – that’s dumb news!

When stakeholders of the current status quo won’t accept that unless the Australian sports fraternity comes to the party and ditches rugby league in favour of rugby union, desperate assurances that PRO14 is the inferior product won’t halt the impending doom of Super Rugby – that’s dumb news!

When the bungling boardroom bozos at SA Rugby and their media proxies prioritise brown-nosing and sweet-spotting, handholding, kumbaya-ing and corporate claptrapping over rugby-playing – again, dumb news!

When Andre Rademan inspires confidence and sanity, as reported in this paper on Friday September 29 (“Transfer of Kings to start”), I enjoyed the bit about saying to SA Rugby, “Thank you, bye-bye, you are out” – that’s excellent news.
