Grey sides in clean sweep of matches

Spinners give first XI edge against Pearson

-

GREY High’s cricket teams had a clean sweep on Saturday, winning all their games against Pearson and Westering. After some midweek rain, the pitch for the first team encounter had a tinge of green, resulting in Grey captain Sean Callaghan deciding to bowl first after winning the toss.

Campbell de Wet took two wickets up front to put Pearson under pressure, but this was slightly released as the Grey seamers could not consistently hit a line and length.

Pearson reached 96/4 at the drinks break after 25 overs.

Callaghan then introduced his spinners and there was a fresh focus to the Grey attack.

The slow bowlers worked their way through the opposition order, taking all the remaining wickets. Nicholas Fowler finished off the innings to claim 3/34 as Pearson were dismissed for 173.

While Grey had a good start in terms of runs, they too lost early wickets, due to some poor shot selection.

At drinks Grey were 75/3, but with Callaghan and Stubbs at the crease they looked in control.

Callaghan was then dismissed for 25, leaving Tiaan van Vuuren to join forces with Stubbs to secure victory by six wickets.

Van Vuuren finished with a solid 34 not out and Stubbs played an excellent anchor role in making 58 not out.

ALEXANDER ROAD

ALEXANDER Road High and Muir College met in their EP school cricket matches on Saturday, with the first team clash producing a thrilling finish as the Uitenhage side clinched victory.

In a low-scoring affair, the Muirites held their nerve under pressure to win by one wicket as the match went down to the wire.

Alexander Road could manage only 87 in their innings, but then fought all the way before Muir finally edged home to reach 88/9.

The Alexander Road U15A side claimed a hard-earned four-wicket win over Muir.

Batting first, the Muir side scored 137, with Alex bowler Jaydrian Williams taking three wickets.

Christopher Cressey then steered Alex to victory with a well-played 29.

In the U14A fixture, Muir batted first and posted a good score of 225/7 in their allotted 40 overs.

Young Sima Menta scored a neat 70 runs, rotating the strike with ease and hitting 11 fours.

He was ably supported by opener AJ Isaacs (35) and Anathi Somfula (25).

The Alex fielders failed to take their chances, dropping four easy catches.

In reply, Alex managed just 123, with only Braden Henning standing firm in an innings of 32.
