LEADING up to the start of the National Senior Certificate final examinations, which began on Monday, several schools undertook a pledge to ensure that this year’s exams remain fair and incident-free.

On Friday, the PE Office of the Nelson Mandela Bay district arranged an exam pledge ceremony for schools in the region.

This saw 50 pupils and teachers from 16 schools take part in the pledge, which aims to ensure pupils writing the final examinations in the district, province and nationally will abide by the stipulated regulations and guidelines.

The pledge was initiated by the Department of Basic Education in 2013.

The pupils pledged that they were looking forward to the examinations, having studied hard and being well-prepared by their teachers.

The teachers present confirmed this view, stating that they were honoured that their schools were participating in such a prestigious ceremony.

The first speaker for the day, Booysen Park High School deputy principal Latiefa Bruce, encouraged pupils to aim for the best they could be.

The second speaker, Mandilakhe Nobtenja, from SARS, also encouraged pupils to work hard, as the future was full of promise for them.

The pledge was read by Betheldorp High School headboy Duncan Dedericks, with all the pupils and teachers present joining in.

The provincial National Senior Certificate examination pledge signing ceremony took place on the same day at St Thomas Private School in King William’s Town.
