Rocklands pupil is brightest spark
ROCKLANDS Intermediate farm school’s Onodwa Jantjies proved to be the brightest spark when she was crowned the best speaker during the regional Eskom School’s Nuclear Debate.
The debate, which was held recently at Pine Lodge, in Summerstrand, saw the 16-year-old Grade 10 pupil win the Bright Spark award. Eskom nuclear new build acting general manager, Loyiso Tyabashe, said: “Jantjies embodied the principle of Eskom’s debating programme on nuclear, which is a passion for knowledge and engagement.
“She understood her role in the team, structured her speech perfectly, thus guiding the house on the team’s strategy and pillars of the argument.
“She was courteous and engaging on facts and her presentation style.”
The Rocklands debate team were also announced as the overall winner, and each member received a tablet, a certificate and a backpack.
The school, which is on the outskirts of Uitenhage, took home a floating trophy.
Limekhaya Secondary’s debate team, which came second, received a R4 000 gift voucher each, a certificate and a backpack. They were followed by St Colmile Senior Secondary School’s debate team, and each member walked away with a gift voucher of R2 500.
The Eastern Cape Schools Nuclear Debate initiative is part of Eskom’s five-year Schools Adoption and Skills Development Programme which is aimed at enhancing and promoting excellence in education.
