‘Metro cops sent to remove me’ – Daniels

NELSON Mandela Bay councillor Marlon Daniels was removed from a municipal customer care centre by the metro police after going to look for secondhand furniture for his office, he said.

Daniels, of the Patriotic Alliance (PA), is upset after he faced off with the metro officers who, he claimed, were summoned to remove him from the Korsten Customer Care Centre on Wednesday.

He was looking for furniture for his office at the Gelvandale municipal swimming pool, after being told there was no budget for furniture.

In September, PA national leader Gayton McKenzie pulled the plug on his coalition agreement with the DA after failure to get Daniels elected as the deputy mayor.

Daniels believed he was now not getting support as a result.

He took to Facebook and posted: “Metro police was summoned to remove me from Korsten Customer Care Centre where I went loafing [sic] for a desk to put in my office, because I am fed up with being told that there is no budget for furniture.”

Daniels said he was told there was not even money to put up a sign saying “councillor’s office”.

He was fed up and frustrated with the lack of support from the municipality, Daniels said.

“It’s only right to have a little signage outside that says this is a councillor’s office and I was told there was no money for [a sign].”

The councillor said he did not understand why officials said there were no funds, as the new financial year only started in July.

“When you exhaust all avenues of communication, you go over to action – and this is exactly the point where I find myself at now,” Daniels said.

“I believe I’m not being recognised anymore for having walked out of the coalition for reasons stated before and I feel like this is a deliberate act.”

On Facebook, Daniels said he had been working from the boot of his car for most of the year.

Council speaker Jonathan Lawack said the sideline allegations by Daniels were attempts at “trying to score cheap political points”.

“They are untrue,” Lawack said.
