Spring Rose chase glory in Mayoral Cup final

- Yonela Mofu

SPRING Rose will be hoping to bring the Mayoral Cup rugby trophy home when they tackle Gardens in the final at the Wolfson Stadium in Portr Elizabeth on Sunday.

As the competition draws to a close, the remaining teams in the various divisions will be fighting it out for the honour of being crowned the champions of Nelson Mandela Bay.

Spring Rose, who are in the top division, will take on Grand Challenge finalists Gardens in what should be a tough game.

The Rose outfit began their road to redemption by beating African Bombers in their opening fixture.

They have been sharp on defence and have had a brilliant campaign in the competition, bagging three consecutive wins.

The Uitenhage side began their campaign with a huge statement against Despatch Oostelikes, beating them 42-17 in their opening fixture.

Gardens’ run was made sweeter when they had revenge on traditional rivals Progress, who they lost to in the Grand Challenge competition.

They have not bagged any silverware this season and will be hoping to change that.

In the curtain-raisers, Glen Roses will clash with Uitenhage, while Kuyga will be looking to oust Hilltop Eagles.

Club rugby giants St Marks will lock horns with new kids on the block Siyakhula.

The Siyakhula team have stunned all their opponents and have made a name for themselves in the club rugby fraternity.

Also hoping to lift a trophy will be the Kwaru women’s side, who have been ruling group C.

They have had an incredible campaign in the tournament and have walked away with emphatic victories against all their opponents.

They will be taking on African Bombers, who will be equally motivated to challenge for this year’s title.

The first game is scheduled to kick off at 10am and the final game will start at 4pm.

The fixtures are: Kuyga v Hilltop Eagles, Glen Roses v Uitenhage RFC, Spring Rose v Gardens, St Marks v Siyakhula, Kwaru v African Bombers (women).
