Italian soloist for ECPO

-

RENOWNED Italian pianist Gloria Campaner will perform as a soloist with the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (ECPO) in their concert A Symphonic World at the Nelson Mandela University this weekend.

Orchestra manager Gill Barnett said those who missed Campaner performing for the PE Music Society this week can hear her play Schumann’s Piano Concerto with the ECPO at 3pm on Sunday at the South Campus auditorium.

This will be their last concert for the year and, with no available funding, orchestra members have agreed to play for no fee. The university and PE Music Society were also supporting the event, Barnett said.

“Without any funding for concerts we were expecting to end the year on a silent note; however you can’t keep a good orchestra down,” she said.

“This is an extremely exciting event for us as it proves the wonderful collaboration not just among the ECPO players, but between the ECPO and the university as well as the PE Music Society.

“We are truly grateful to our players, colleagues and friends in the music world for helping to make this concert happen.”

A Symphonic World will be conducted by David Scarr and besides the Schumann piece, the programme will feature Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and Dvorak’s much-loved Symphony No 9 From the New World.

Regarded as one of the most interesting young pianists of her generation, Campaner is a sought-after soloist and chamber musician around the world.

An official “Steinway & Sons Artist”, she has won numerous national and international awards.

She is also associated with some of Italy’s most prestigious fashion houses and has gowns provided for her by the likes of Armani and Cavalli.

Tickets, at R90 and R100, are at Computicket, with limited pensioner and scholar tickets at R75.
