Final circuit racing event of season sees record entry

-

THE Bay’s Aldo Scribante Raceway hosted its final circuit racing event of the season last Saturday.

The record-breaking entry list had officials and time-keepers on their toes from early on.

The motorcycle sprint races provided lots of thrills, with the 600cc club championship going down to the last lap of the last race of the season.

The championship was so close that Ivor Vermaak and Paul Roelofse ended with a tie in points. The tie was broken by declaring Roelofse, the rider with the most wins for the season, the overall 600cc club champion.

The motorcycle endurance races also proved entertaining for spectators and riders alike.

PE rider Bert Jonker, in only his first year of racing, took line honours in the Klinicare PE100 20-lap endurance race. He also took the Index of Performance win thanks to his consistent lap times.

PE200 line honours went to the team of Gareth Gehlig and Kewyn Snyman, promising young riders from Cape Town.

The PE200 Index of performance win was awarded to Bradley Rehse from East London.

Racing in the historic category was guaranteed to be good with the likes of legendary drivers Sarel van de Merwe and Robbi Smith joining the local regulars for the Ford and Friends event.

A large contingent of Cape Town drivers and a few from East London brought the total number of cars to 39 for the sprint races, with the cars being split into two segments.

Great racing in both segments kept the crowd entertained throughout the day and whetted their appetite for the Midas three-hour endurance race at 6pm.

This race was a thrilling affair from start to finish, with the overall victory going to Gerald Wright and Ferdi van Niekerk in an Opel Sports 2000.

Second place went to Graeme Nathan and Mike Rowe in a VW Polo and third was Hennie Trollip and Jimmy Smith driving a Lotus 7. The Index of Performance winners were Daniel Bright and Paul Roelofse in the Headstart/Fuchs Citi Golf, with second place going to the overall winners. Third place went to Rane Berry and Anton Ehlers.
