Trollip the best man for job of mayor

-

A FORMER British prime minister once said: “A week is a long time in politics.”

This saying has, over time, been amended by some to include “the weak are a long time in politics”.

Leadership is widely recognised as a highly prized commodity in South Africa.

I’m talking about the leaders who take the hard decisions because they are right.

I’m talking about leadership that embodies courage and discipline to row against the populist tide of political expediency.

Leadership that tells people what they need to hear, not just what they want to hear.

The ANC was in government in Nelson Mandela Bay for 22 years – a long time in politics.

Last year the people of NMB voted to elect a new government for five years, yet after just one year in government, many who voted for change are effectively calling for the ANC to be returned to power, through the back door.

Many have declared that the new coalition government has failed, despite the positive strides it has made.

Our mayor, Athol Trollip, may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

He is, however, the best man for the job.

Say what you will, but he says what needs to be said and gets on with the job.

Strong, decisive, honest leadership is what has been severely lacking in NMB and now that it is here, people are uncomfortable.

By making the hard decisions and doing the right things Trollip has disrupted the corrupt, crony network of rent-seekers, and his thanks for the job are death threats, daily insults and attacks on his personality.

His ability to weather such pressure is testament to his commitment to turning things around in NMB.

He has no vested interest and is acting on behalf of the entire community.

John Brown, Walmer, Port Elizabeth
