Freezer babies case will be heard in May

- Lulamile Feni

THE trial of the woman dubbed “Freezer Mom” must wait a further five months to start.

Yesterday, Melice Jacobs, 33, of New Brighton, Mthatha, was told by Judge Robert Griffiths that the trial would begin on May 2.

Jacobs was arrested on February 10 2015 in connection with the grisly discovery of bodies of babies found in freezers.

The infants’ bodies and placentas were found resting among cakes, meat and vegetables.

The house was owned by her mother, but Jacobs had lived there for many years with her boyfriend, who has since died.

In previous hearings, the court heard the bodies were full-term babies and one foetus. Three of the four were girls, one a boy, and the foetus was that of a girl.

Jacobs faces four counts of murder and one of concealment of birth.

Jacobs, who is out on R5 000 bail, is accused of committing the acts between 2010 and 2014.

Although many people had hoped the matter would be heard in the Mthatha High Court yesterday, they were disappointed after the case was postponed due to agreements between the parties.

Unlike previous appearances at the lower courts, fewer people came to see Jacobs yesterday.

Bail was granted on condition she no longer stays in New Brighton, Mthatha.
