Coun­ter­feit cloth­ing worth more than R45m seized

COUN­TER­FEIT cloth­ing worth more than R45-mil­lion was seized in cen­tral Jo­han­nes­burg yes­ter­day when po­lice raided an aban­doned build­ing.

The raid at the premises – al­legedly used by for­eign na­tion­als as the pro­duc­tion plant – was con­ducted by the po­lice and of­fi­cials from the SA Rev­enue Ser­vice.

Shoes‚ T-shirts and jack­ets, with im­agery re­sem­bling dif­fer­ent pop­u­lar brand names, were seized.

Po­lice spokesman Cap­tain Kay Makhubele said 20 for­eign na­tion­als had been ar­rested and would be charged with deal­ing in coun­ter­feit goods.

“We also took sev­eral ma­chines [al­legedly] used to pro­duce fake brands,” Makhubele said.
