Hearts surprise with top log position

HEARTS are the unexpected leaders in the Safa-NMB SAB soccer league as they go into the Christmas recess, but assistant coach Munchy Margon is not surprised.

“After our poor showing last season, we were determined to be among the challengers this time,” he said. “We introduced a number of young players and it has paid off.”

Hearts are one of four unbeaten teams in the league and head the log on goal difference, but they still have a match in hand.

Defending champions NMU Madibaz are fifth, but soccer manager Mark Tommy is not concerned.

“Just four points separate the top eight teams and this is very exciting as we go into the Christmas recess,” Tommy said.

“The break has always been challenging for Madibaz as most students are from out of town and return only in the second week of February.

“The league will resume on January 7 and we will be hard-pressed to put a team together.”

Fairview Rovers, who disappointed last season after being serious contenders until near the end, are seventh, four points off the pace.

“We are happy so far,” Rovers assistant coach Garfield Sauls said. “In our last match we beat Motherwell Academy 3-1 and everything came together.

“We plan to carry the momentum into the new year. We have identified one or two experienced players and hope to sign them when the transfer window opens next month.”

At the bottom of the log, Golden Aces have a mountain to climb as they are the only team without a point.

Ikamva Movers and FC Winners are slightly better, with just a point each from drawn matches.
