Man dies as container crushes cars

-

ONE person died and nine were injured when a container fell off a truck on the M7 under the N2, Kwazulu-Natal emergency services said yesterday.

Two of the nine were described as being critically injured after the accident at about 10am.

“Sadly one person has sustained fatal injuries. Paramedics treated nine other patients‚ who had been occupants in one of the vehicles that the container fell onto‚” emergency services said.

Arrive Alive said: “Rescue Care paramedics were called to the scene to find absolute carnage.

“A truck had somehow lost control on the offramp and collided with three vehicles before overturning and crushing two vehicles.

“Paramedics found the vehicles spread out over a long distance. Immediately more ambulances‚ as well as advanced life support units‚ were dispatched to the scene.

“In one vehicle‚ paramedics found three occupants trapped.

“The driver was assessed and found to have sustained major injuries. Unfortunately‚ there was nothing more paramedics could do and he was declared deceased at the scene.

“The two rear passengers‚ one a teenager‚ were trapped and were stabilised by advanced life support paramedics while the Durban Fire Department worked to cut them free.

“Once freed‚ they were transported to a nearby hospital for the further care that they required.

“A total of nine people had sustained various injuries and were all treated at the scene before being transported to nearby hospitals.

“At this stage, the events leading up to the collision are unknown.

“However‚ police were on the scene and will be investigating further.”
