Hijacking at Addo railway line gates

-

I NOTE, with concern, that The Herald claimed that the Addo hijacking happened at the Matyholweni gate (“Alarmed by report of Addo hijackings”, December 28), which is motorised and is fully automatic, and not the main gate.

I have attached a Google Earth photo, left, of the road leading to the main Addo gate.

There are “manual” gates on either side of the railway line, just a short distance from the R342, which are usually open and therefore not noticed by everyone.

The hijackers closed one of these gates so as to force the occupant/s of the vehicle, exiting the park, to stop and get out to open the gate.

The gates have subsequently been locked “open” with stout chains and locks.

A correction in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and also for a great read every day. A concerned reader,

Colchester THERE was a miscommunication between SANParks and The Herald regarding a “second main gate”. This was not the Matyholweni gate.

SANParks states: “Driving into the park towards Main Camp, one crosses a railway line, then a gate which is always open during the day until 10pm.

“This is the gate which was tampered with by the suspects.

“About 1km further up the road one reaches the actual gate for registration, payment and security checks.” –
