Dark drama, scathing jokes stars of Golden Globe awards

- Jill Serjeant

DARK drama Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was the big winner with four Golden Globes awards on a night marked by scathing jokes about sexual harassment and passionate odes to those breaking their silence.

Mother-daughter comedy Lady Bird was named best comedy film and Saoirse Ronan took the comedy actress award.

Gary Oldman was named best drama movie actor for his role as British wartime leader Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, while Frances McDormand took home the award for drama actress for her role as an angry mother seeking vengeance in Three Billboards.

James Franco won the comedy actor award for his cult movie homage The Disaster Artist.

Mexican director Guillermo del Toro won best director for magical fantasy The Shape of Water.

However, the night was dominated not by who took home prizes but by jokes about the sexual misconduct scandal that has rocked Hollywood.

“Happy New Year Hollywood! It’s 2018. Marijuana is finally allowed and sexual harassment finally isn’t,” Globes host Seth Meyers quipped in his opening remarks, bringing wild applause from the A-list audience in Beverly Hills.

Referring to the male nominees gathered in Beverly Hills for the top television and movie awards, Meyers said: “This is the first time in three months it won’t be terrifying to hear your name read out loud.”

The Handmaid’s Tale, a series about a misogynistic authoritarian regime that takes control amid a fertility crisis, won in the separate category of best television drama series, with its star Elisabeth Moss taking best actress.

Moss paid tribute to Margaret Atwood, whose book was the basis for the series.

“This is for you and the women who came before you and after you who were brave enough to speak out against intolerance and injustice and to fight for equality and freedom in this world,” Moss said.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, a series about a woman who becomes an unlikely stand-up comedian after splitting from her husband, won best comedy or musical series, and its star Rachel Brosnahan won best actress.

“This is a story about a bold, brilliant and complicated woman, and I’m endlessly proud to be a part of it,” Brosnahan said.

Emmy-winning Big Little Lies, which stars Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley as three California mothers hiding a huge secret, earned the Globe for best TV movie or limited series.

It also took home a trio of acting awards -- best actress for Kidman as an abused wife, best supporting actor for Alexander Skarsgard as her violent husband and supporting actress for Laura Dern, who plays a mother trying to find out who is bullying her daughter. – Reuters, AFP
