TOUGH OPPONENTS IN SUPER 8 TOURNEY
TOP-SEEDED Kaylin Bouwer, of Eastern Province, overcame a tenacious opponent and blustery conditions to book her berth in the final of the Growthpoint Super 8 tennis tournament at the PE Lawn Tennis Club yesterday.
With a strong westerly making life difficult for all the players, Bouwer had to work all the way for a 6-4 6-3 win over Maretha Burger in the open section.
The result set up a final today against second seed Bianca Wolmarans, who held her nerve as Lungile Ntuli fought hard in the second set before succumbing 6-1 6-4.
The men’s open final will be contested by Ryan Little and Samuel Townes after identical winning margins yesterday.
Little overcame Charles Wheeler 6-3 6-4 and Townes had the same scoreline as he eliminated Aiseah Ramos.
Bouwer made a shaky start against Burger, trailing 2-0 before winning the next five games in a row.
However, her opponent never gave up the fight and she closed to 5-4, saving several set points before Bouwer finally drew first blood.
The second set followed a similar pattern as Bouwer took control at 5-1.
Again Burger showed her fighting qualities to win the next two games before the top seed settled the matter.
Bouwer will be aiming for her second straight Super 8 title after winning the Strand tournament in the Western Cape last month.
