Grey off to flying start at inaugural event

-

THE GREY High water polo team enjoyed an unbeaten run in the inaugural Grey First Team Invitational Festival held at the Grey Aquatic Sports Centre at the weekend.

The top four teams from the Eastern Cape were joined by Stellenbosch school Paul Roos in a full set of round-robin fixtures on Friday evening and Saturday.

There is very little to choose from this year between the four top Eastern Cape schools, which made for some closely contested matches.

The two unbeaten teams, Grey and St Andrew’s, met in the final game.

The Grey team played some slick polo, which resulted in them achieving a clean sweep against strong opposition.

Grey travel to Bloemfontein this weekend to play in the Grey College Festival, which attracts most of the top water polo schools teams in the country.

THE Grey first team enjoyed a doubleheader against Pearson at Pearson this weekend, comfortably winning the Twenty20 clash, but being held to a draw on Saturday.

In Friday’s T20 match, Pearson won the toss and elected to bat first, ending on 114/6 from their 20 overs.

Grey batted well and timed their chase to perfection, winning in the 18th over. Luke Beaufort top-scored with 44 not out.

The visitors were also well on top in the declaration game on Saturday, but could not bowl the Pearson team out.

After a rain delay, the game eventually got under way, but the overs in the day had to be reduced to 96.

Electing to bat first on a pitch that grew progressively slower, Grey lost an early wicket but Matthew Biggs (66) and Nick Fowler (51 not out) batted well to take them to 210/5.

LJ du Preez took a wicket in the first over, but Pearson then batted out the day to end on 114/ 5 from 46 overs.
