Our organisation helped residents

- Desiree Martin, Port Elizabeth

I REFER to an article, “Winds, lightning cut Bay’s power” (January 24).

I, too, am a resident at this retirement village and I write this to correct certain aspects of your report.

Although the article was correct in stating we were without electricity for two days and that we had been provided with food, it was certainly not by the municipality!

It was our head office, namely the Echo Foundation, that organised for us to receive food, catered by EP Caterers.

This was soup and rolls (which we received late in the afternoon on Monday January 22) and chicken stew and rice (which we received at midday on Tuesday January 23). We could eat it in the hall or take it to our cottages.

Regarding the difficulty for residents to fetch the food, our supervisor, our sister and two residents took food to those who use walkers or find it difficult to walk.

Boiling water was provided in the hall during the day for use by the residents who were advised to fill their flasks.

Residents could also charge cellphone batteries and lamps for their use in the evening.

While this might seem a minor error on the reporter’s part, I feel the municipality should not be given the credit, when it was our head office, Echo Foundation, who assisted us.
