AN elderly couple were attacked and beaten on a Colleen Glen smallholding on Monday night.

The couple, who were beaten with a steel rod and panga, were rushed to Greencares Hospital.

The 74-year-old man and his 71-year-old wife declined to talk to the media yesterday, also asking that their names not be released.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said a preliminary report showed the couple were accosted on their Seaview Road plot, near Cows Corner, at about 8.30pm.

The man was outside in the garden when he was attacked by two men hiding in the bushes.

“They accosted him with a panga and a steel rod. There was a scuffle but they forced him into the house,” Naidu said.

“During the commotion, his wife went to investigate [and] she was also attacked.

“One of the suspects took the woman to the safe and ordered her to open it. Jewellery and a revolver were stolen from the safe. “The men then fled on foot.” Farm Comm neighbourhood watch chairman Willie Bosch said his team was alerted to the attack after security had been alerted.

“Our medical team provided initial treatment while waiting for the ambulance and medics,” he said.

“The husband suffered a gash to the head and lacerations to his arms and hands from the panga. His wife luckily escaped with a few cuts.”

Bosch said his team, together with the police, searched the area for the men, to no avail.

Greenacres hospital spokeswoman Adele Kennedy said the couple were treated and discharged.
