Win series to help your kiddies

NB PUBLISHERS have released a new all-in-one Learn to Read and Write book for Grade 3 school pupils, building on their Grade 1 and 2 offerings in this field. Compiled by Mart Meij and a panel of eight other assistants, this is a workbook with reading lessons, language and handwriting exercises and assessment tasks. Meij says it may be used on its own or to complement other Foundation Phase material. However, although the material in Learn to Read and Write has been developed according to CAPS, it does not replace what the teacher does in the classroom but rather aims at supplementing it. Both teachers and parents are the target market for Learn to Read and Write, in the hope of strengthening children’s language by giving them the chance to practise at the right level.

With four out of five (80%) Grade 4 pupils falling below the lowest internationally recognised level of reading literacy in South Africa, according to a Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (Pirls) released last year, it is clear that our education system is not in good shape.

Therefore, although it is a rare parent who will have the time to sit down with their children after homework and still plough through more reading material, books like this can only assist.

One reader of The Herald can win a set of Grade 1 to 3 books in the series, each of which retails for R120.

To stand a chance of winning a set of these educational books, send an SMS with your name to the number: 41893.

Entries close at noon on Wednesday and the winner will be notified thereafter. SMSes should be kept to a maximum of 320 characters at a charge of R1.50 per 160 characters. Free minutes do not apply and errors are billed.
