Visitors out to win mares, fillies race

- Punters’ Pal

ALL eyes will be on the main event of the race meeting at the Fairview track today.

There is great interest countrywide in the Lady’s Bracelet race in which 14 fillies and mares will face the starter.

It has been some time since a race in Port Elizabeth has attracted so many visiting stables.

Six out-of-town trainers will attempt to deny the locals the R150 000 prize money that is up for grabs.

The race looks wide open and should be an exciting affair.

For the punters this should be a race to play your swingers and quartet. In the Pick Six and Place Accumulator it should be best to go wide.

The visitors want to win this race. Most of the raiders should be included in the bets.

With a low weight and the very capable Richard Fourie in the saddle, threeyear-old filly Angel’s Trumpet could be the one to beat. Star Burst Galaxy and Easy Street will carry the hopes of the locals to pull this one out of the bag.

In some of the other races there are raiders who mean business: Washington Square (race 3) and Ollivander (race 5) look like bankers.

There is some quality on display today and we are in for an exciting and competitive meeting.

Let’s hope we have a nice atmosphere at the track. Since November, decent crowds have become regular at Fairview.

On Friday last week, there was some new young blood among the spectators, with some Nelson Mandela University students working on a project named “A day in the life of a race horse”.

The students saw some exciting racing, with the gutsy Cloud Atlas winning the Breeders’ Guineas Plate in fine fashion.

American lecturer Gary Prevost was not part of this group, but became a regular visitor in Fairview’s HB Christian Room in the first half of last year when he was in Port Elizabeth to do some work at the university. He is no doubt enjoying Bay racing. Punters’ Pal tips
