Grey 1st on top twice at weekend

GREY’S first cricket team scored overwhelmi­ng victories in their weekend double-header, beating Queen’s and Graeme.

Sent in to bat on Friday, Grey faced a tough challenge after rain in the morning against a positive Queen’s attack.

After getting through a difficult first hour, Tristan du Randt topscored with 53. Luke Beaufort scored 46 and Matthew Biggs 49 on his birthday, taking them to 224/8.

Grey’s opposition had no answer to the pace attack.

LJ du Preez had a fine maiden five-wicket haul.

He had figures of 5/9 as Queen’s were dismissed for 27.

Grey played Graeme College in a 50-overs match, piling up 259/8 in their innings.

Stubbs top-scored with 59; Du Preez and Nick Fowler both scored 41.

After lunch, Grey broke through for Connor de Lange to mesmerise the middle and late order with his leg spin.

He took 5/11 to bowl Graeme out for just 81. THE Grey first team had mixed fortunes at the KES Festival in Johannesbu­rg.

They won three matches and lost three to end 11th out of 16 teams.

After a narrow 10-8 loss to St Stithians, they were taught a lesson by eventual champions Rondebosch.

Grey won their final pool match against Maritzburg College (13-6) to end third.

In the plate section, they had wins against Parktown and Reddam, but lost a close game to Jeppe 5-4. GREY had four teams of four players each in the Fynbos Invitation­al near Eerste River.

The Grey first team had a solid performanc­e in the morning foursomes competitio­n, but their afternoon betterball performanc­e ensured a six-stroke lead at the end of the day.

Grey thirds won the B section, taking a healthy lead of 11 strokes after the first day and won by 20 strokes.
