DEFENDING Northern Areas Football Association champions Wolves Football Club will be looking to chalk up their first win of the season when they take on Bloom Callies this weekend.

Coming off an opening weekend stalemate against Stardrift, the Gelvandale-based team are itching for that first win to get the season moving in the right direction.

Wolves manager Andre van Rooyen said the team’s result at the weekend was a fair reflection of the match.

“The team performed excellently in the first half, but due to a lack of match time, our legs ran out in the second half and they [Stardrift] came back strongly.”

He said the team had a busy preseason with some friendlies, as well as a tournament featuring the top eight teams from the various Nafa divisions.

Looking ahead to the weekend’s clash, Van Rooyen said the team would take confidence from the firsthalf performance against Stardrift, despite not being at full strength.

“We have some injuries in the team, but they are coming back this week, so by next week we will be back to full strength.

“That [injuries] should not be an excuse because we have very good players coming through from our reserve and youth teams.”

Van Rooyen said the team had a few goals they wanted to achieve in the first half of the season, one being to focus on the four games leading up to the SPAR Nafa Easter Tournament.

“If we can come away with a few wins, it will put us in a decent position going into the Easter weekend.” He said the team were gearing up to tackle some playoff matches for the Castle League.

This week’s fixtures will have a few changes, with the Saints-Hotspurs match moved to tonight.

Tomorrow, two matches are being moved from the Windvogel Sports Grounds to Fairview.

The fixtures are: Today: 8.30pm: Saints v Hotspurs (Saints) Tomorrow: (3.30pm): Celtic v Shamrocks (Dyke 2), Park United v Ramblers (Marock Road), Blackpool v Helenvale (Fairview), Glenville v Rangers (Glenville), Wolves v Bloom Callies (Adcock D) Sunday: (3.30pm): West Lake v Fairview Rovers (Fairview), Stardrift v Fairdene (Marock Road)
