TWO people were killed and three injured in separate accidents in Nelson Mandela Bay and outside Jeffreys Bay in one day.

The most recent crash happened at about 7.30pm on the N2 near Kabeljous at Jeffreys Bay on Friday.

Police spokesman Sergeant Majola Nkohli said the accident happened after a bakkie stopped at the side of the N2 with a flat tyre.

Sunita Laurens, 46, from George, was killed in the crash.

“It is believed that a cream Nissan bakkie with a trailer travelling towards Port Elizabeth was parked on the roadside with a puncture.

“Another vehicle, a silver Peugeot hatchback travelling in the same direction, swerved to avoid it, collided with the trailer and lost control.

“The Peugeot veered off the road and rolled,” he said.

“The deceased, a passenger, was declared dead at the scene.”

Nkohli said three other people, including the driver, were injured and taken to Humansdorp Hospital.

In a separate accident at about 1am on Friday, Tinus Swanepoel, 24, was killed when he was flung off the Cotswold Bridge after his motorbike hit a lamppost.

The white Suzuki 600, which had a Durbanville, Cape Town registration number, was recently purchased and had not yet been registered in Swanepoel’s name.

According to medics, Swanepoel was resuscitated several times while en route to hospital.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said it appeared Swanepoel had lost control of the bike and hit the lamppost on the bridge.

“On impact, the driver flew over the railings of the bridge and landed on the N2 below,” she said.
