Three northern areas shootings

- Gareth Wilson

TWO people were wounded and one killed in three separate shootings in Port Elizabeth at the weekend.

None of the victims were gangsters but, in two of the shootings, gangsters were apparently involved.

The first shooting happened at 8.30am on Saturday, outside a tavern in Bethelsdorp, when a 29-year-old man was shot in the upper leg.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the shooting happened while residents were attempting to catch an alleged criminal.

“At about 8am, an alleged robbery took place in front of a tavern in Qunu in Bethelsdorp.

“The community apprehended a suspect and an altercation ensued. During the altercation, it is alleged that two suspects approached the crowd and one of them fired several shots, resulting in the crowd dispersing.”

Shortly before 11am on Saturday, a 20-year-old man was shot inside a house in Reynecke Street in Gelvandale.

“A group was sitting in the house when three men walked past and started shooting at the house. The man was shot in the face.”

Naidu said the gang who fired shots at the house was affiliated to the 16 Honde gang while the victim had no gang affiliation.

At about 1am yesterday, Ryno Tamboer, 30, was shot dead inside a shack in Tobias Street, Gelvandale.

“The suspects kicked open the door to the shack and fired several shots inside. Tamboer sustained multiple gunshot wounds.”

Two of the cases have been taken over by the provincial gang investigation unit.
