Reds turn tables on Bulls

-

THE Queensland Reds came from behind to beat the more-fancied Pretoria-based Bulls 20-14 in their Super Rugby clash in Brisbane on Saturday.

Down 14-10 at half time, the Reds dominated possession and territory in the second period to overhaul the Bulls and win their second match in a row, following their victory over the Brumbies in round three.

“We’re pleased [with the scrum] but we still want to work hard on it. We’re a young pack, but we’re not small,” Reds captain James Slipper said.

The Bulls opened the scoring with a try to Warren Gelant when the Queensland defenders came out of the line in defence and allowed the visitors to create an overlap.

The Reds hit back with a penalty, but the Bulls struck almost immediately with a superb long-range try to Andre Riann Warner, who started the move 50m out and backed up to take the final pass and score under the posts.

But Queensland continued to apply pressure and got to within four points when No 8 Caleb Timu crossed out wide and James Tuttle converted.

The second half belonged to the Reds and they hit the front thanks to an Aiden Toua try under the posts which Tuttle converted.

Despite the pressure, Queensland could not manage to cross the Bulls line, but a Jono Lance penalty gave them a six-point buffer and they never looked like relinquishing the lead.
