Strikers record shock win over title contenders

THE tails wagged the dogs in the Safa-NMB SAB League over the weekend, with six of the teams at the bottom of the log picking up a point at least.

Tailenders Mabayibone Strikers caused probably the biggest shock of the season when they beat title contenders Morning Stars 2-1 at the Walmer Community field on Sunday.

The previous day they drew 2-2 with Young Killers, but the four points were not enough to lift them away from the bottom of the log.

To cap a dismal weekend, Stars were thrashed 5-0 by Ikamva Movers.

Following the two defeats, they drop to sixth on the log, their lowest position this season.

FC Winners, who are one place above Strikers, lived up to their name with maximum points from their double header.

They beat Young Killers 1-0 on Saturday and Amarhamba United 2-1 the following day.

Like Strikers, picking up six points does not improve their position on the log.

Amarhamba, who were the giant-killers for the past three weeks, came down to earth with a bang when they were thrashed 5-0 by Motherwell Academy.

Motherwell failed to reproduce the form on Sunday and lost 2-0 to Major Chiefs.

It was a good weekend for Chiefs, who beat Camper United 1-0 and are now second on the log, just three points behind leaders NMU Madibaz. The students fought back from a goal down to record a 3-2 win over Golden Aces, who are on the edge of the relegation zone.

The Zwide outfit took a well-deserved lead early in the match, but two quick goals by Soko Madaliso saw Madibaz leading 2-1 at the break.

Cloudius Sagandira increased the lead with an excellent counter attack.

In the dying seconds, Aces pulled one back but it was too little too late.

Madibaz’s chance of increasing their lead suffered a setback on Sunday when their match against Camper United at the NMU south campus was called off due to a no-show by match officials

Hearts, who started the year at the top of the log, continued their dismal run, going down 1-0 to Despatch Pioneers on Friday evening and then drawing 2-2 with Young Ideas on Sunday.

Fairview Rovers kept their league hopes alive with a 1-0 win over Roaring Tigers and a 2-2 draw with PE Sundowns.

They are fourth, seven points behind the log leaders.
