1907: Indians start a protest under Mohandas Gandhi against new legislation forcing males to carry passbooks and have their fingerprints registered. 1987: Archbishop Desmond Tutu, pictured, meets the ANC in Zambia and fails to convince the organisation to abandon the armed struggle. 1991: Authorities grant indemnity from prosecution to 2 605 anti-apartheid activists and members of far-right groups, including 1 819 MK members. 1994: In Ciskei, a mutiny by police and defence forces leads to the resignation of Brigadier Oupa Gqozo. The Transitional Executive Council sends representatives to take over control of the homeland.
