Legato to perform at NMU

THE Music Department at Nelson Mandela University will be hosting renowned a capella group Legato at the South Campus Auditorium next week.

The Port Elizabeth-based music group, whose talented members are also students of the music department, will be performing at the next instalment of the university’s lunch hour concert series on Wednesday at 1pm.

This versatile group is comfortabl­e performing in various genres such as gospel, African traditiona­l music, jazz and Afro-Soul.

The group members are Phiwokuhle Tyatya, Luyolo Stungu, Ntlantla Swana, Lwando Lukhuko and Milani Sixakwe.

In 2015, Legato entered a television music competitio­n that was broadcast on SABC 1: Sing-Off South Africa.

They were the only group to represent the Eastern Cape and managed to secure second place overall in the competitio­n.

Legato has since performed on many stages in South Africa including at the Nacma Awards, the National Arts Festival, the Mandela Bay Festival and the Grahamstow­n Jazz Festival.

They have shared the stage with the likes of Ringo Madlingozi, Kwesta, Zolani Mahola and Freshlygro­und, the late Sfiso Ncwane and Grammy award-winners Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Legato was nominated for the EspAfrica Young Legends Top 20 and succeeded in reaching the Top 10 of the competitio­n last year.

The group is very excited to perform in front of their home crowd, as they will be jetting off to Turkey at the end of the month to perform at various hotels for the next six months.

Entry to Wednesday’s concert is free of charge.
