Ocean racing series to wrap up at weekend

THE final round of the aQuelle Ocean Racing Series will take place at Hobie Beach on Sunday.

The most popular event this season has been the 1km swim, with 923 entries so far, followed by the 1km run for 12 years and under, with 700 entries.

Third in the popularity stakes is the 2km swim, with 684 entries, while the 400m swim attracted 340 entries this season.

In the 5km run, women’s champion Tara Sacke, 14, has had a great battle with 13-year-old Lea de Villiers and trails by 25 points in the overall standing.

Similarly, the men’s 5km run will only be decided on Sunday, with Masixole Sophangiso, 14, from the Masakhane Future Stars programme leading the standings by just five points from Jayson Archibald, 10, and Mzwakhe Madoyinzan­a, 18.

The 5km walk overall titles have already been secured by Taryn Ferreira and Grobbie Grobbler, who have both been undefeated this season.

Newcomer Aminah Lindoor, 12, looks set to be the new 400m women’s swim champion alongside men’s holder Connor Craig, 12.

Paige Black, Antonella Saporta and Denise Bosman are in a three-way struggle for the women’s 2km swim title. Keegan Cooke has secured the men’s event.

Chane de Jager looks set to take the 3km swim title, while the men’s event will be decided between Heinrich Vorster and Bruce Campbell.
