Struggling Strikers get off the floor as Madibaz soar

THE topsy-turvy results in the Safa-NMB SAB League continued this weekend with Mabayibone Strikers moving away from the bottom of the log with maximum points from their double-header.

They beat fellow strugglers Golden Aces 2-1 and Motherwell Academy 1-0. Academy drop to the bottom after losing their second match against Ikamva Movers 3-2.

Amarahamba United, who went into the weekend a place away from the bottom of the log, also picked up maximum points from their double-header.

They beat Roaring Tigers 2-1 on Thursday and Young Killers by the same margin on Saturday to move two places up the log.

Log leaders NMU Madibaz recorded their fourth successive win when they thrashed Morning Stars 3-0 on Friday evening.

Sachin Rautenbach netted a brace, with Cloudius Sagandira netting the third.

The students dominated the match and could have won by a far greater margin.

However, they failed to reproduce that form the following day and were held to a 1-1 draw by Young Ideas.

Dominating the first half, Madibaz led 1-0 at the break with a goal by Athini Papu, but missed chances proved costly as Ideas drew level with a penalty.

Major Chiefs remain second with a 2-1 win over Young Killers.

On Sunday, they had their second match against Morning Stars called off because of a clash of colours.

It was a disappoint­ing weekend for Fairview Rovers, who lost 2-1 to Hearts on Friday and drew 1-1 with Despatch Pioneers on Sunday.

Despite the poor results they remain third, where they are joined by Ikamva Movers.

Cole Schoeman, who is one of the leading goal-scorers in the league, scored both goals for Hearts in their

win over Rovers. On Sunday, they lost 1-0 to PE Sundowns after a goalless first half.

Julian Cooper led the slaughter with a double hat-trick.

Kurt Petersen and Bongani Zono added a brace each with Chad Schimper completing the rout.

Double champions Chippa United, who ended last season unbeaten, started the year on the back foot, losing 1-0 to NMU Madibaz.
